Obama Care Vs Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY)

The healthcare system of a country plays a significant role in ensuring the well-being of its citizens. In recent years, several countries have implemented healthcare policies to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to their citizens. In this article, we will compare two such healthcare policies – Obama Care and Ayushman Bharat.

Obama Care:

Obama Care, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), was signed into law by President Barack Obama in March 2010. The main aim of the ACA was to provide affordable health insurance to millions of uninsured Americans. The ACA made it mandatory for all Americans to have health insurance or face a penalty. It also provided subsidies to low-income families to make health insurance affordable.

Ayushman Bharat:

Ayushman Bharat, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), was launched by the Government of India in September 2018. The main aim of the PMJAY was to provide free health insurance to over 100 million families in India. The PMJAY provides coverage of up to INR 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary healthcare.

Comparison:

  1. Coverage:

The ACA provided coverage to all Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions. On the other hand, the PMJAY provides coverage only to families that are below the poverty line.

  1. Cost:

The ACA was funded through a combination of taxes and penalties, and subsidies for low-income families. The PMJAY is funded entirely by the government of India.

  1. Implementation:

The ACA was implemented gradually over several years, and faced numerous legal and political challenges. The PMJAY, on the other hand, was implemented quickly and has received widespread support.

  1. Services:

The ACA provided coverage for a wide range of medical services, including preventive care, maternity care, and mental health care. The PMJAY provides coverage for secondary and tertiary healthcare services, including hospitalization, surgery, and cancer treatment.

Conclusion:

Both Obama Care and Ayushman Bharat have made significant strides in providing affordable and accessible healthcare to their citizens. While the ACA provided coverage for all Americans, the PMJAY provides coverage only for families below the poverty line. The ACA was funded through a combination of taxes and penalties, while the PMJAY is entirely funded by the government of India. Despite their differences, both policies have had a positive impact on the healthcare systems of their respective countries.
